Kali Audio LP-6 Speaker Overview

Kali Audio LP-6 is a speaker that belongs to the active speaker family . This category is characterized by the presence of an amplifier integrated into its box. Unlike passive speakers, this type of monitor does not need an external amplifier to function.

Just like the Adam T7V monitoring speaker , the LP-6 from Kali Audio is equipped with a class D amplifier . Amplifiers belonging to this class offer high efficiency. Furthermore, they have the advantage of consuming less energy compared to class A amps.

This model benefits from the bi-amplification system . It notably has two speakers:

  • A 6.5-inch woofer to reproduce low frequencies
  • A 1-inch dome tweeter to reproduce high frequencies

These speakers each deliver a power of 40 W , bringing the total to 80 W. Its maximum sound pressure level is 115 dB . Its frequency response can range between 39 Hz and 25,000 Hz .

When it comes to the looks of the Kali Audio LP-6, there is nothing exceptional. It is a black box equipped with a woofer and a tweeter on its front. You have to turn the device to see its multiple adjustment options.

It is a space-saving model on a desk since it measures only 353 mm in height and 222 mm in width. With its 7.05 kg, it is lighter than its big brother, the LP-8, which weighs 9 kg.

Features on the rear panel of the Kali Audio LP-6

The rear panel of this monitoring speaker includes the following elements:

  • DIP switches
  • Balanced and unbalanced inputs
  • A volume control

DIP switches

On the upper part of the rear panel of this speaker, there is a reference guide. This tells you how to set the DIP switches according to the speaker positions in a room. We will come back to this in more detail a little further down in this article.

The entrees

The Kali Audio LP-6 is equipped with three inputs:

  • Two balanced inputs: a TRS and an XLR with +4 dBu sensitivity
  • An unbalanced input: an RCA of – 10 dBV sensitivity

The RCA input is intended to accommodate a computer, a telephone, a player or even a record player.

As for the XLR and XLR, these inputs allow you to connect your professional audio equipment. This could be, for example, an audio interface, a mixer or even a controller.

Please note that you can also use a ¼ inch TS cable. However, this one displays a higher sensitivity to noise .

The volume control switch

On the right side of the TRS input you have a control allowing you to adjust the speaker output . In particular, you can adjust the volume between minus infinity and + 6 dB . The American manufacturer, however, recommends setting the switch to 0 dB, unless you place the speaker in an asymmetrical room. In this case, it makes more sense to increase the volume in order to obtain a perfect balance.

To operate the LP-6, simply plug in the power cord that is included in the box. To turn the device on and off, you have a classic ON/OFF button.

Low frequency compensation switches

Switches #4 and #5 allow you to control the bass frequencies . By default, switch #4 is fixed in the down position. To enable bass compensation, simply pull this switch up.

Once low frequency compensation is enabled, you can increase the gain by 2 dB by pulling switch #5 up. To reduce the gain by 2 dB , pull it down.

Note that if you turn off switch #4, you cannot adjust the low frequency gain.

High frequency compensation switches

The operation of switches #6 and #7 is similar to that of switches #4 and #5. The only difference is that these allow you to adjust the treble .

The RCA input control switch

Switch #8 is used to enable or disable the RCA input. When you plug your device into this input, you must set the switch to ON. Indeed, by default, this input is deactivated to avoid interference .

By the way, you can also check out our test guide and review of the M-Audio BX8 D3 speaker . This guide presents the elements on the back of this speaker, its Acoustic Space function, its sound quality, its technical characteristics, and without forgetting our opinion on this speaker from M-Audio.

The build quality of the Kali Audio LP-6

In general, the build quality of affordable monitor speakers leaves something to be desired. The Kali Audio LP-6 is an exception to this rule. Indeed, it is equipped with a solid MDF wooden box made of vinyl . However, be careful not to expose it to humidity or heat. This could damage the vinyl.

As for the components, here again, the quality is there. This speaker benefits in particular from a tweeter and a woofer delivering great performance (more details a little further down). In addition, its front vent is designed to eliminate unwanted turbulence .

This technology promotes the fluidity of the speaker's directivity throughout its frequency response. Furthermore, this device is designed in such a way that the sound power of the device allows the listener to hear a precise sound.

In practice, this system helps you better position your recording equipment thanks to the spatial details it provides.

Note that the Kali Audio LP-6 has a front port . This means that you can place this device in a small space near a wall without affecting its sound reproduction.

On most bass reflex speaker , air is exhausted at different speeds. This usually creates noisy turbulence. As a result, some background noise can be heard in the bass.

Fortunately with the Kali Audio LP-6, we are not faced with this kind of problem. In fact, its vent has been designed to bring out the air at the same speed . This allows for a cleaner low-end response.

Zoom on the sound quality of the Kali Audio LP-6

Speakers adorned with the Kali Audio logo generally offer impressive sound quality . The LP-6 is the perfect example. From the first listens, we can notice that its sound reproduction has nothing to do with that of ordinary monitoring speakers.

This model reproduces highs and mids with unrivaled precision. If you plan to play electro music, you will certainly appreciate its low frequency rendering. Indeed, this speaker offers a beautiful presence and remarkable warmth in the bass .

Its faithful reproduction of low frequencies is undoubtedly linked to the quality of its woofer. Indeed, this speaker intended to reproduce bass sounds is equipped with a voice coil . Added to this is a large magnet which gives it exceptional linearity. In addition, this model delivers low distortion .

Its front port also has its role to play in amplifying low frequencies.

And the cherry on the cake: this studio monitor gives you several adjustment options to optimize the sound . It notably offers switches allowing you to adapt the sound reproduction to your workspace. For example, you can reduce low frequencies when you place the speaker near a wall.

Our opinion on the Kali Audio LP-6 speaker

The major advantage of the Kali Audio LP-6 lies in its sound quality. This model notably produces precise and clear sound across the entire frequency range. It must be said that at this price, it is quite rare to find a speaker that delivers such performance.

Furthermore, in terms of manufacturing quality, this model impresses us. It benefits from an MDF wooden box which looks robust.

For the inputs, you will be entitled to classic connections: an XLR or a TSR ¼ for the balanced inputs and an RCA for the unbalanced. However, it does not have a Bluetooth option. However, you can use it to connect several types of devices such as your phone, your audio interface or even a record player.

Another practical feature of this model: the reference guide on its back. This will be very useful for beginners. This guide makes it easy to adjust the DIP switches according to the listening environment.

You can therefore have access to all the required configurations directly on the box. No more need to consult the user manual for each installation.

Here is a quick summary of the advantages of the Kali Audio LP-6:

  • Exceptional sound quality in all frequency ranges
  • Good manufacturing quality
  • Convenient settings options
  • Visual guide on the backplate
  • Affordable price

Our verdict on the Kali Audio LP-6: this speaker passed the test with success. We recommend this model to all audiophiles who wish to acquire a model offering good value for money. It is the ideal equipment for working in the studio.
