Focus on the Tannoy brand

Before diving into the review of the Tannoy Gold 5 speaker, let's first focus on this brand. This is a company that has proven itself in the world of high fidelity for over 90 years. Indeed, this Scottish brand and monitoring speakers have a history that dates back to 1926.

Tannoy's track record is as long as an arm. Among its greatest successes, we can note that in the 70s when the brand became a major player in studio recording . The Scottish manufacturer's speakers were notably used at the Abbey Road studio . Another notable Tannoy success: their speakers were used by the famous musician Vangelis in the 80s.

Tannoy speakers can be found all over the world: at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, in luxury hotels in Las Vegas, in the famous London Palladium theater... and perhaps soon in your studio. 'registration.

If the Tannoy brand has been so successful, it is thanks in particular to the sound quality of its Tannoy speakers. This remains unmatched to this day. Speakers decorated with the Tannoy logo are renowned for their ability to reproduce sound coherently and precisely .

This brand is also known for its Dual Concentric speakers which benefit from a coaxial design. This technology gives Tannoy speakers exceptional performance in transitions. Furthermore, it makes the frequencies homogeneous and the sound natural.

The Tannoy Monitor Back was the first speaker to benefit from Dual Concentric technology . This configuration is also found in other Tannoy models such as the Precison , Revolution Xt or Gold ranges. Tannoy Gold 5 speaker overview

The Tannoy Gold 5 belongs to the family of active monitoring speakers just like the Focal Shape 65. This type of speaker is renowned for their faithful reproduction of different sound sources. We will see the test results a little further down in this article to confirm this.

The Tannoy Gold 5 has an integrated class AB amplifier in the subwoofer. And it can produce up to 200 Watts . This model benefits from the bi-amplification system. This means that it is amplified by two amplifiers, one for bass and one for treble.

This active speaker notably has a 0.8 inch tweeter (for high frequencies) which acts as a core cover. This is a titanium dome tweeter . As its name suggests, this type of tweeter has a dome-shaped membrane.

The name “Gold 5” refers to the size of the woofer which is 5 inches . As for Tannoy's Gold 7 and Gold 8 models, their woofer sizes are 6.5 and 8 inches .

Let's talk a little about the build quality of the Tannoy Gold 5. As usual, with this brand, the build quality is always there. Moreover, this is what made the Tannoy company famous among audio professionals and enthusiasts.

At the base of the speaker, there is a rubber coating. This anti-slip device gives the Gold 5 good stability. Therefore, you do not risk being confronted with noise pollution due to floor vibration.

For safety reasons, this enclosure is equipped with thermal protection and short circuit protection . It also has a front vent, which allows you to position them close to a wall.

It is possible to connect the speaker to a mixing console or audio interface using its XLR input or the balanced jack input.

The Tannoy Gold 5 speaker does not come alone. It is in fact accompanied by some accessories, among others:

  • A 2 m long mains cable
  • A 5 m mini-jack cable
  • A user manual

The Tannoy Gold 5 is not at all bulky on a desk. It has a height of 294 mm , a length of 183 mm and a width of 252 mm . With its 5.8 kg , this model is the lightest in the Tannoy Gold series. In fact, the Gold 7 and the Gold 8 weigh 9.4 kg and 14 kg respectively.

Tannoy Gold 5 control devices

Like all models in the Gold series, this one is equipped with several devices allowing you to control the speaker . We find in particular on the front:

  • An HF trim control that lets you adapt the monitor's treble frequency response to suit ambient conditions
  • An LED light that glows green when you activate the Power switch and red if it is turned off.

The rear side of the Tannoy Gold 5 is equipped with the following elements:

  • An auto-sleep feature that turns off the power when no sound is output for a certain period of time.
  • A bass setting to adapt the monitor's bass frequency response to the characteristics of your listening room
  • Inputs to connect up to 2 audio sources using XLR and TRS plugs
  • A power jack
  • A switch to turn the speaker on and off

The Tannoy Gold 5 speaker and its coaxial speaker

The Tannoy Gold 5 is a speaker that accommodates two electroacoustic transducers . These drivers have the role of converting the electrical signal into sound . Like Tannoy's Gold 7 and Gold 8, this one benefits from the famous Dual Concentric.

In traditional 2-way speakers (like the one used with the Genelec 1032 CPM ), the drivers are positioned in different locations within the reflector. On the other hand, with this coaxial configuration, the tweeter is placed in the middle of the woofer. Result: a point sound source .

The other advantage of Dual Concentric is that it provides uniform dispersion in both horizontal and vertical planes. Which gives it excellent off-axis performance.

It should be noted that this technology was first developed by Tannoy in 1947. Since then, several improvements have been made over the years in order to optimize its performance . This concept has also been reproduced by other brands of speakers. This is particularly the case of the manufacturer Genelec with the The Ones model .

Zoom on the sound quality of the Tannoy Gold 5

The Tannoy Gold 5 offers exceptional sound quality . Indeed, thanks to its coaxial speaker , this speaker offers precise sound reproduction . This speaker will certainly delight the most demanding professionals and amateurs.

Given that this is an active speaker (just like the KRK Rokit 5 G4 studio monitor ), I expected a lack of coloration. And unsurprisingly, this is indeed the case. This speaker does not color the sound and offers neutral sound reproduction . This means that this model will be of great help when mixing.

Its frequency response is 70 Hz to 20 kHz , with a tolerance range of plus or minus 3 dB . For a 5-inch woofer , its lower limit is still quite high. Indeed, with a speaker of this size, we expect a minimum response of around 45 Hz . Regardless, it’s clear that the Gold 5 sounds pretty good overall.

If you want to strengthen its low frequency response, consider using its front port wisely . To get more bass boost, you can place the speaker closer to your wall.

Each piece has its own characteristics. Which complicates the choice of a speaker. Fortunately, with the Tannoy Gold 5, you won't face this kind of problem. Indeed, this speaker has been designed to adapt to a wide variety of rooms . This is possible thanks in particular to its HF control which allows you to adjust the treble and its bass adjustment switch.

With these features, you will have no problem adjusting the sound to match the requirements of your listening space.

Obviously, the design of the box is not without consequences on the sound reproduction. Among other things, this impacts the reproduction of low frequencies. It should be noted that the Tannoy Gold 5 belongs to the category of bass-reflex speakers . Which explains the fact that it is capable of going lower in the bass compared to a closed speaker.

Indeed, a “Bass reflex” type subwoofer speaker uses the sound from the rear side of the diaphragm to increase the efficiency of the system at low frequencies.

To fully enjoy the sound quality of these Tannoy speakers, you need to find the ideal listening distance . Since this is a nearfield monitor , consider placing them close to the listener.

It is recommended in particular to position them 0.75 to 3 meters from the listener . For the best listening experience, also consider tilting these speakers toward the listener. The ideal would be for the tweeters to reach ear level.

Our opinion on the Tannoy Gold 5 speaker

If this is your first step with the Tannoy brand, I advise you to opt for its series of monitoring speakers. You will surely appreciate the sound quality of this Gold 5 which has nothing to do with cheap models.

Precise and natural, its sound reproduction completely stands out. If you are looking for precision and neutrality, investing in this model would be a good option. In terms of balance, this model is much more interesting than the KRK Rokit for example. In short, we can't fault the Gold 5 much in terms of sound quality.

Another strong point of the Tannoy Gold 5 lies in its control devices. Thanks to its bass adjustment, you can adapt the output according to the requirements of your listening room. Added to this is the treble adjustment between -2 and +2 dB.

And that's not all ! The Gold 5 has a very practical feature: it is possible to connect two sources using the XLR and TRS connections.

In terms of sound, this model tickles high-end speakers such as the Neumann KH 120. And yet, the price of the Gold 5 is much cheaper than that of this model from the German brand.

To top it all off, the Tannoy Gold 5 offers excellent value for money. I can only recommend these speakers to you.
